The first producer of sweatshirts in the United States was Russell Manufacturing Company. Mr. Benjamin Russell founded it in 1902 in Alexander City, Alabama, as a result of his passion for sports. Equally important, his vision to create jobs for the community drove him to raise what today is Russell Athletic. Thus, this company is manufacturing apparel and uniforms for teams and athletes around the US for 117 years.
Consequently, in their search for improvement, in 1926 Mr. Russell’s son Benny had the idea of replacing the uniform’s material from the itchy wool to cotton. In 1930 it came out to the market, henceforth it is in our closets as a must-have piece of garment.
